TCM Restoration & Cleaning Blog

‘Twas the week before Christmas when all through the house
The carpet was dirty, and so was the couch.
A throw rug was placed by the chimney with care,
In hopes it would cover the burn marks that were there.
The children were cleaning under their beds,
When millions of dust mites dropped on their head.So Dad clipped a coupon, and hoped it was true.
Then he called to get carpet cleaned for $9.95 per room.
Then out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash.
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear.
Two carpet cleaners in a van finishing their beer. The driver stumbled out, giving his cigarette a flick
Swearing under his breath, “Let’s make this one quick”,
They walked…

Great article from IICRC.org

“Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.

More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to pre-loss conditions. Through timely response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold and other health issues can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur.

All IICRC-certified professionals have the training and experience to identify moisture sources, evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected), contain damage, remove contamination and dry materials to ensure that mold will not return.”

We are IICRC certified and ready to help you if you have a water emergency in your home.   Frozen pipes, water tank ruptures, leaky roofs, toilet overflows, dish washer flooding, ice maker lines leaking…we’ve seen it all! Our crew responds 24 hours a day even on Holidays!  We work with all insurance companies and serve Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, Wasilla, Big Lake, Willow & Talkeetna.

4 Steps to Fresh, Clean, Healthy Carpet

Step #1

If you’re thinking about having your carpets cleaned, we encourage you to follow these four steps:

STEP #1: Make a commitment to yourself to get your carpets cleaned.

The longer they remain dirty, the sooner they’ll wear out. Industry testing shows that you can have up to one full pound of dirt in a square foot of carpet before it begins to look dirty. This dirt is abrasive and wears down the fibers and substantially shortens the life. Many warranties require at least an annual cleaning by a professional to be honored (check your own warranty to see your requirements, and if they specify the type of cleaning method to keep your warranty in effect).

Another necessity of regular cleaning is to remove the contaminants besides the “dirt” that gets trapped in your carpet’s fibers. The longer you wait to clean, the longer you have to breathe all the pollen, fungus, pet odors, dust mites, and chemicals that hide in your carpet.

4 Immediate Steps to take in a Water Damage

When water damage occurs, even a few hours can make the difference in saving expensive carpets and furniture. If you are ever in an emergency situation with water running everywhere here are some steps you should take to minimize your losses.

1. Avoid Hazards

Be extremely careful of the deadly combination of water and electricity. Also, be cautious of slippery wet carpets and floors. Stay away from Raw Sewage backups, which contain nasty bacteria and can be harmful to your health.

2. Stop the Source

If you haven’t located the source of the water, call us immediately and we will guide you through this (it is very critical to know what to do.) 373-7410 in Wasilla or 562-7410 in Anchorage.

3. Take immediate action

Call TCM Restoration 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will always be answered by friendly staff. No answering machines here! Our dispatchers will have a water damage expert contact you immediately. Call us now! After you call us, were on our way.

4. Remove Furniture

Wood furniture will cause stains which cannot be removed. Rust stains from metal are difficult to remove and may be permanent. 95% of water damage jobs are restorable, and the 5% which aren’t restored, most are caused by not doing this. So either move furniture that’s even near water or place something under the legs.

If you are ever in the unfortunate predictament of having water damage in your home TCM Restoration can expertly dry and restore your home & belongings for you. We have expert trained restoration teams ready to go 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist you in a water emergency.

Important to have an Emergency List if you leave for the Holidays

If you go out of state for the holidays and either have a house sitter or someone checking in on your home you should have a list of emergency numbers for if that emergency happens.  We all know about dialing 911 for break ins and suspicious activity,   But who do they call when there has been a flood in your house?  Is it a plumber, your insurance agent, a restoration company?  Actually it can be all 3…but your best bet is leaving the number of a restoration company which will make the timely connections with the plumber &  agent and be able to take care of everything even if you are out of state.   A restoration company will most likely stop the source of water as soon as possible and start extracting the water immediately,  The faster water is removed the less damage.  If you are going away for Holidays and are in Anchorage (562-7410) or Mat Su Valley  (373-7410) make sure you add our numbers to your emergency call list.  We’re here to help 24 hours a day.

Frozen pipes? Flooded carpet?

Below zero temps can freeze and literally pop & burst pipes.  If you find this happening and water gushing everywhere….  The most important thing to do right away is to stop the source of water.  Does everyone in your  home know where the main water shut off valve is?  If not take the time to show everyone.    This can save a homeowner thousands of dollars in damage by stopping the water as quick as possible.

The next step is to remove the water from your flooded home.  A wet vac is NOT going to take hundreds of gallons of water out of wet carpet and flooring.  You need to call a professional restoration expert and have the water removed as quick as possible.  Most restoration companies have crews on call 24 hours a day.  If the one you call can’t get to your home immediately you should call another one.  Time is of the essence and we know by getting to the flooded house fast we can save the homeowner money & shorter length of time dealing with this disaster in their home so they can get back to their regular life.     We serve Anchorage and the Mat Su Valley and do everything from intial dry out, monitoring, content cleaning  & if needed reconstruction.

How to get rid of pesky fruit flies!

Everyone loves fruit and if you are eating healthy chances are you will always have a bowl of fruit on the counter for a quick, healthy snack.  Unfortunately sometimes fruit flies come home from the store with our fruit, multiply and suddenly there is an infestation of fruit flies in our homes.

Here’s my simple tips to get rid of those pesky, annoying fruit fies:

1.  Store fruit in the fridge and take a break from buying some fruit that has to sit on the counter like for example bananas.

2.  Wipe down all counters and cabinets…clean thoroughly.

3.  Wash dishes right away or put in dishwasher.  Fruit flies attract to dirty dishes.

4.  Don’t have wet dish rags out.   Fruit flies attract to those too!

5.  Use the attachment on your vacuum and vacuum the areas you see them most common.  You  might have to go on stealth attack…sneak up, aim & then quickly turn on the vacuum & attack!

6.  My last tip is homemade fruit fly traps.   And here is the simple recipe:

In a small bowl or jar add apple vinegar & a few drops of dish detergent.  Let sit and you’ll see in no time fruit flies floating in the trap & NOT buzzing around your home.

Why this works?  Fruit flies are attracted to the smell of the vinegar, and will attempt to land on its surface. However, they’re in for a surprise – since the dish soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, the fruit flies fall in and drown.

With all my above tips you should be rid of those pesky fruit flies and be able to enjoy that fruit bowl on your counter again.
